How to replace Glass Screen

Hello iFixit experts

It may be early to ask

But I would love to have your opinion

Whether the new " ipad air 2 "

Glass screen would be replaceable or not

You know they are now one layer with no

Space between glass and touch screen

Would really appreciate your expectation

Thanks

(Error 53)-was the reason replacement of the home button resulted in bricking the device,Specifically when one would attempt to update the device post repair. This error was never supposed to reach the public,it was a security feature that was implemented by Apple to ensure that Touch ID was in fact working on a device before it was shipped for sale.It was never intended to reach the public but it slipped through the cracks and instead ended up bricking devices that had replacement Touch ID when one would try to update the device post repair. This issue was fixed in early 2016 and no longer is in existence. So no worries it's completely safe to update your devices post repair nowadays :)

A kind reminder, keep the original home button, if you break it, the entire iPad is beyond repair.

von

If you use a different home button the button will work but the Touch ID won't work. Just like if you replace the home button in a iPhone 5S/6/6+.

von

No, THE ENTIRE DEVICE WILL DIE IF YOU REPLACE THE TOUCH ID BUTTON.

von

Yes, the home button will work (though not the Touch ID), you just won't be able to restore the phone. So if the iOS crashes, the phone is a brick.

von

Hi Tom, can you elaborate on the home button issue. With the iPhone's you can replace the home button but lose touch ID. Is it a different / more drastic case with iPad Air 2?

The only problem will be the repair cost, currently 95% of broken iPad screens are just the front glass/touch screen, the LCD is usually fine, now the cost of repairing the iPad air 2 when you crack the glass will be considerably more when compared to the original iPad Air, I find this design change by Apple a non excusable, disgraceful way to make the new iPad Air less repairable

or a well intentioned way to make it thinner and lighter, no?

von

I don't need it to be thinner if its cost prohibitive to fix it. I have 40 ipads for my employees, but now i'm going to switch to samsung because this just got way too expensive for me!!!

von

What samsung tablets don't adhere the glass to the digitizer and lcd?

von

I second Fixit's response.

von

I also agree with iFix, this is just another way for apple to keep everything in house.

They tell the consumers stupid $@$* and most wholeheartedly believe them. Error 52 regarding the touch sensor is yet another face-slap from Apple. Security my ass. They sold record amounts of iPhones in January.

correct me if i am wrong. it seems the glass, digitiser and LCD are fused into 1 unit, i would think if any of these 3 got broken, the whole screen unite needs to be replaced.

If one breaks you can replace it as an assembly or if the glass just breaks you can do a glass only replacement like you can do on the iPhones but you will then have to refuse the glass and lcd with LOCA or OCA. And with such a big screen it will be hard. At first it will be a costly repair but over time the price will go down for the assembly. If you are really worried about it spend the extra $100 or so and get AppleCare so if anything happens you pay (I think $79) and they replace it with a new or refurbished one. This will always be cheaper than getting it fixed. I always get apple care bc I know how pricey the parts are. If you are a repair company I suggest doing it as an assembly and order as you need them.

von

What if you were able to come up with a way to remove just the glass from the LCD and then repol the unit and apply new OCA and cover glass. What type of response is out there for that?

von

Just when I thought Apple couldn't pi$$ me off again, the new fusion screen has proved to be the best way to highlight how sorely we miss Steve Jobs Genius.

Although, some of the comments and their lack of any evidence to show the poster actually read this thread is like an assault on the reader's intelligence. Suggesting we buy the glass screen without the lcd component when - as pointed out in the comment by fixit, THATS WHAT WE WANT/HAVE DONE since its initial release. Apple CHANGED THEIR DESIGN to a screen/LCD in ONE UNIT.

Its only $149 for an iPad Air 2 replacement front panel. Last time I checked $100 + $79 is $179. How is that cheaper than $149? Postage and handling is similar to what it'd cost for the fuel to go to an Apple Store.

Im not trying to be facetious. Its common courtesy to show some level of respect for the poster by objectively reading their respective question or comment.

This site has saved me more money than any other where iDevice repairs are concerned. Ive got 2 iPad Air 2's (16GB model) with cracked glass only. Thank goodness I know how much Apple charge because now I know which is cheaper!

von

Yes just in case, I know the $100 is a one off or annual but the screens the only issue Ive ever noticed thats common. Why pay to join if its more expensive than buying the part necessary. It maybe relevant to businesses that use bulk iPads but it's not far fetched to think there's some policy to justify a separate list for consumer/business.

for lower risk profile take it to apple or a replacement unit, it saves getting stung by a third party repairer who may stuff the job up and leave you with a half functioning device which then you cant go back to apple. I think the replacement is $300 for an iPad via apple for a broken glass / lcd. but you get a brand new iPad !

Hi, I'm a refurbisher. I have done several ipad air 2 glass replacements. It is possible but if you never have done it, it is not recommanded. Ipad air 1 and air 2 do not have compatible lcds. You cannot buy ipad air 2 lcd only without glass

I did do a repair once removing the glass cleaning the lcd and reinstalling the new glass without oca. You need some soldering, and some knowhow. Also, take into account that the space between lcd and glass need to been big enough not to have the rainbow effect (glass touching the lcd when pressed on). Ghost typing can be a problem as well if not done correctly.

It is better to use OCA (forget about LOCA), for best results but you need expensive machines to install that can handle the big 10-11 inch screen. Forget about oca if you do not have the right equipment.

Conclusion: if you never have done glass only repair on air 2 do not do it. A new once is expensive i know. :s

If you can get the old lcd+glass off from your device without cracking the lcd I happy to buy it from you.

Best regards Dries

Seems like they are available. If it is right.

I have a screen separator machine and I have successfully separated the LCD from iPad pro, all surface pros and apple air 2. It just takes practice and don't use a customer's screen to experiment. I have successfully applied oca and installed a digitizer on surface pros but my next step is the iPad pro.

www.laptopscreenmontreal.com I think I posted a few pictures on separation.

Hi Dries,

Are you still interesting in purchasing the LCD's of Air 2's and if so how much as these will be cleaned of digitiser glass and loca and tested before ready for sale.

Let me know regards
