The Toyota Corolla is a line of compact and subcompact automobiles produced by Toyota, a Japanese automaker. The Corolla line was introduced in 1966 and became the world’s best-selling car by 1974. The Toyota Corolla has been in the world’s top-selling cars since then 1974. In 1997, the Corolla became the top-selling automobile in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle.

The name “Corolla” is Latin for “small crown” and is part of Toyota’s tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedan models. Early Corolla models were mainly rear-wheel-drive vehicles, though later models have generally been front-wheel-drive. Four-wheel-drive Corolla models have also been produced. The Corolla’s hatchback companion, called the Toyota Auris, was available from 2006-2018 in Japan and much of the world.

The first Corolla generation was introduced in November 1966 and included an 1100 cc K-pushrod engine. The Corolla Sprinter was released as the Corolla’s fastback variant in 1968 and was exclusive to Japanese dealerships. The second generation added a two-door liftback version in 1970. In 2006, the tenth generation Corolla was released with Japanese markets calling the sedan version the Corolla Axio and the station wagon version retaining the Corolla Fielder name. In 2013, the Corolla Axio and Corolla Fielder were released with hybrid versions in Japan.

Toyota vehicles in the Americas can be identified by the Toyota emblem, which depicts three overlapping ellipses. Corolla vehicles also include an emblem with the name “Corolla” in capital letters. The car’s trim level name may also be included on the rear of the vehicle, generally in capital letters.
