Vor ein paar Wochen hat uns Apple mit der Ankündigung von zwei neuen iPads überrascht. Beim ersten iPad auf unserem Teardown-Tisch gab es nur ein paar Miniveränderungen, wir hoffen also, dass es bei diesem hier etwas spannender wird. Los geht's!

Dieses neue Air stammt aus der Pro Reihe und hat somit die gleichen Maße, den Smart-Anschluss und ein paar weitere Features vom 10,5" Pro von 2017.

Weitere Unterschiede sind eine neue, dunklere Space Gray Farbe, keine Kameraausbuchtung und nur zwei Lautsprecher im Gegensatz zu den vier des Pro. (Landscape Stereo Ton gibt es nur bei den Pros.)

Im Vergleich zu seinem Mini-Bruder ist es eigentlich nur ... größer.

iPads sind weiterhin schwer zu öffnen, also haben wir etwas mehr iOpener genommen.

Mit ihren vereinten Kräften sowie einem Saugheber und etwas Schneiden schaffen wir es, in das verschmolzene Display zu gelangen und es anzuheben.

Der erste Blick ins Innere zeigt, dass sich das Layout ziemlich von früheren Airs unterscheidet, denn das Logic Board befindet sich in der Mitte, wie wir es schon von einigen Pro iPads kennen.

Sicherheit geht vor! Das Trennen dieses Akkus ist definitiv nicht so idiotensicher wie die Halterung im iPad Mini 5.

Es fühlt sich an, als wären die Displaykabel gerade etwas zu kurz, um die Kabelhalterung leicht lösen zu können, was für einen spannenden Balanceakt beim Lösen der Schrauben sorgt.

Der doppelzellige 30,8 Wh Akku ist ein kleines bisschen größer als die 30,2 Wh, die Apple versprochen hat, er ähnelt damit dem 10,5" Pro und stellt eine erhebliche Verbesserung im Vergleich zum 27,6 Wh Akku im Air 2 dar.

Wenn es doch nur auch die hochbegehrten elastischen Klebestreifenlaschen geerbt hätte ... seufz.

Nachdem dieses Air nun über 10,5" verfügt, hat das verbesserte Display auch Unterstützung für den Apple Pencil erhalten, aber nur zweitklassige, der neue Pencil 2 ist ganz exklusiv nur der Pro Reihe vorbehalten.

Die Größe, die Pencil-Halterung sowie die Chips sind ähnlich wie beim 10,5" Pro. Allerdings fehlt dem Air ein wichtiges Pro-Feature, nämlich das coole ProMotion 120 Hz Display.
I guess it’s the Intersil in red that’s causing all the heat while using the Apple Pencil. Gets nice and warm in that bottom corner while taking notes etc.

Statt der Surround-Sound-Lautsprecher des 10,5" Pro, finden wir im Gehäuse eine große Metallhalterung sowie zwei Stifte.

Diese kleinen Erhebungen aus Metall stützen wahrscheinlich das Display und enthalten zusätzliche Antennen bei den LTE Modellen.

Während die Frontkamera des Mini erheblich aufgerüstet wurde, bleibt die Rückkamera des Air weiterhin bei 8MP, also haben die 12MP des Pro weiterhin die Alleinherrschaft über den Fotobereich der 10,5" Tablets.

Wir entfernen die einzelne Schraube und lösen das riesige Abschirmblech vom Logic Board ab, um das herrliche Silizium darunter zum Vorschein zu bringen.

Wir wollen ja jetzt nicht klingen wie eine alte DDR-Schallplatte aber der Schein trügt nicht! Dieses Air 3 sieht wirklich dem 10,5" Pro wirklich sehr ähnlich!

Ein zentrales Logic Board, ein doppelzelliger Akku, Unterstützung für Apple Pencil und ein Smart-Anschluss schreien für uns förmlich nach "Pro" , alles was uns fehlt sind die zwei zusätzlichen Lautsprecher.

Sowohl das Air 2 als auch das 10,5" Pro haben eine ziemlich miserable Bewertung was die Reparaturfähigkeit angeht. Wird dieses Tablet vielleicht neue Wege gehen? Wenn du's gleich wissen willst, scroll runter!

- Alle Schrauben können mit einem einzigen Kreuzschlitzschraubendreher entfernt werden.
- Viele Komponenten sind modular und können unabhängig voneinander ersetzt werden, aber der Lightning Anschluss ist mit dem Logic Board verlötet.
- Ein Austausch des Akkus ist möglich, aber immer noch unnötig kompliziert.
- Viele Komponenten und Kabel sind mit Kleber befestigt, was alle Reparaturen erschwert.

what parts are interchangeable from the iPad pro 10.5 and the iPad Air 3 ? Screen, Battery, Chargerport ?
Double-sided Lightning port? (I’m giving up on Lightning; I now believe Apple has made the decision to not pursue Lightning as a long-term connector format, so I’d be surprised to see double-sided here (which could be nearly-as-capable as USB Type-C, pin-wise, minus the legacy USB2 channel).)
And, in your expert opinion, how difficult do you folks think it would have been for Apple to have architected this chassis (and the iPad mini 5 chassis) to support the use of both laminated AND non-laminated displays? I would greatly like Apple, at some point, to show that they’re designing simultaneously for the needs of education/low-cost buyers and “$500 tablet” buyers, differentiating by screen quality and repair cost. The iPad mini 5 chassis -looks- like it could fit the mini 3 non-laminated display within it, if the proper standoffs were milled in (weren’t milled out). IMHO, seeing that kind of “long term vision” of chassis reuse would be a good sign. (I hold out hope of seeing the iPad mini 5th gen mobo in the iPad 7th gen.)
yes the port is double side. seems the usb3 controller is integrate into the SOC this time around.
Another difference - my 10.5” pro has 4gb of ram vs 3gb in the air 3.
The screen connections look identical to pro 10.5”, are they interchangeable?
I broke my ipad air 3 screen. Can use the ipad pro 10.5 screen on the ipad air? Just the screen not the lcd.
Good evening could the nand Flash memory be upgradable like to 512gb?
Hi Jorge,
As the memory is basically chips on the logic board, it is not possible to upgrade it. You can try to replace the entire logic board with one that has a higher capacity pre-installed.
does it have a digitizer
Anyone aware of the multiple issues with Apple Pencil ( 1st. Generation) connecting with the iPad Air? I’m on my second brand new one in 2 weeks and unable to use the pencil. It will not even register/pair with the air. Software updated, fully charged both iPad and pencil. Tried my daughters pencil and it wouldn’t connect/ pair with either of the airs. Both my pencil and my daughters work perfectly with a 12.9 “ iPad Pro and a 9.7 “ iPad Pro without issues. Any response would be helpful. I’m going to ask Apple for a complete refund…
Will iPad Pro 10.5” display fit and work on iPad Air 3?
I’ve found that I have a pressure point (white spot in the screen) and I’ve used multiple methods to remove it, with no success. Places like ubreakifix wanted $250 to just replace the screen, and it’s past warranty to try and take it to Apple to replace.
Russell, that pressure point was a known issue of the 10.5” iPad Pros that this iPad Air is based on, it’s a shame Apple didn’t fix it with this update. Some people have had luck getting a replacement from Apple even out of warranty since it’s a manufacturer defect. If that doesn’t work, you can pay Apple for a battery replacement (usually $99) and they’ll give you a new (refurbished) device since their techs don’t do iPad battery swaps! Not a perfect solution, but I hope this helps. I had the same thing happen to my iPad Pro.
Anyone else knows if the white spot issue has a tendency to get worst overtime? Someone on the apple forum noticed it happens near the are of the logic board where some conector are placed, raising the possibility of a heated related damage to the screen. Since the size of the logic board is limited (as well as the size of such connectors) will the problem get worst over time?
Do you have a kit for replacing the main screen on an iPad Air 3? If so, do you have a walk through showing how to change said screen.
