Look at some of the responses to [http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/18667/Black+screen+on+startup+for+iMac+g5+17inch|this question].  Startup problems with this computer are usually caused by defective capacitors on the motherboard.  The problem and it's solutions are explained more in-depth in the link.
