Why did my desktop icons disappear?

My son let my laptop fall from my little table and when I turn my laptop on it start to download but all the desktop icon are gone and it won't go to safe mode to fix it and it just show the screen none of the F10 or F8 works the analysis say error in my hard drive can some one help me
