The answer is in the way the battery operates. The circuit board has a microprocessor and memory. It is remembering the old set of cells. You may be able to reset it by getting the datasheet for the processor and grounding the reset pin for a couple of seconds. Look carefully for numbers/letters on the IC and google it “[part number]  datasheet”.
