If by gently tapping the timer it starts to spin, perhaps it may be a dirty contact inside the timer.
Do not try opening it up to fix it as you will have contacts and cams everywhere.
There are about 12 cams and 24 contacts inside the timer arranged like a clockwork mechanism.
With the power disconnected from the machine try liberally spraying some [link|https://www.wd40.com/products/contact-cleaner/|electronic contact cleaner] (example only - ''do not'' use regular WD40) through any openings in the timer, allow it to fully dry (read the label on the can), reconnect the power to the machine and check if it works OK and is not intermittent.
