Cannot restore my ipod. I get the error message "iPod could not be restored because it could not be found". I've tried updating iTunes, restarting computer, Running disc utility reformatting/erasing, running partitions. I had to run in start up mode / disc mode and have tried this multiple times, plugged in and unplugged. The battery is fully charged.

Is there anything I can do to install the software. Do you think Apple has removed older ipod software from their site?

Please help

Thanks

methsiri, it will install the software when you restore your iPod. Here is the Apple solution:"How to restore iPod

Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.

Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.

Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.

After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.

Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.

Click Restore.

If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.

A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.

Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).

Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).

During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.

Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.

After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time." source. You can also download the software from here. After downloading the desired firmware below, you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the Restore or Update buttons in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file. Hope this helps, good luck.

clicking it expansds and unexpands the list below it (music,..audiobooks, ...)

There is no "select"

There is no "Restore" to clcik.

.

Sorry, dumb (or just cryptic system?), but all I want to do is rename the %#*@ thing, by starting afresh.

You would first download iTunes 11.1.3 or the latest at that time. Keep in mind that just because it is old does not mean it doesn't work at all. An example would be a classic iPod Shuffle the skinny one. I heard that iTunes 11.1.3 does not support that iPod and that you would have to stay with iTunes 10.9. And then if you have iTunes 11.1.3 you would click on the iPod bar on the top right hand side by the iTunes Store icon and then you would click on the bars to tell your iTunes what to sync to your iPod. Also keep in mind if you remove it from iTunes before ejecting it, you will not get what you have synced on it if someone removes it or knocks it loose from the USB port(s). Also to update software click on the check for software update button on the iTunes 11.1.3 and it should be there on the about my iPod or something like that. Also it will name your iPod to your name like for example Jon Doe. And you NEVER EVER EVER want to sync it with anything other then iTunes.

If your replacing the hard-drive with an SDXC card or SSD make sure it is formatted in Fat32 otherwise the iPod will not recognize it.

I have an IPod Classic with a 1 TB hard drive but can only load 65,583 songs on it which is around one-half of the memory available. How can I increase the song amount allowed to load on it?

You can't using the Apple SW (or the so called Firmware 1.x.x or 2.0.x) with iTunes sync. The limit is about 50000 tracks, so you are already above it.

If you want to really fill your 1 TB you should consider uncompressed audio files or alternatively install a different OS like Rockbox (not sure how well it will work with your iPod without using iTunes)
