Why can't I connect to the internet?

Until a few days ago, i had no problem connecting to my home WiFi network. Now it won’t connect and won’t even recognize other networks in the area. Troubleshooter says there is a problem with the adapter; says the status of the adapter is “not operational.” What are my options at this point? Can/should I replace the adapter myself?

Hi @alexafujise ,

Check the status of the WLAN adapter in Device Manager.

Open Device Manager (right click on Widows Start button, left side of Taskbar select link) and scroll down to Network Adapters, click on the > symbol to expand the list and find the WLAN adapter.

If there is a red cross next to it, right click on the entry and select enable and check if it works OK

If there is a yellow exclamation mark, right click on the entry and select update drivers and follow the prompts. You need to be online (wired) to do this or download them using another device and manually instal them.

If there is no indications of any problems right click on the entry and select Properties and check the device status in the general tab.

If the device is not listed, look in Device Manager > Other Device (if listed) and check. Update drivers if there. If not there check Device Manager > View > show hidden devices and check

If not there check in BIOS (press F2 on startup) to see if WLAN has been disabled.

If still no good, here’s the service manual for the laptop, taken from this webpage. Go to p.38 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove / replace the WLAN card

Using another laptop, I tried to manually download a driver using the link you provided. The Dell website says no drivers for the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 adapter that appears in the device manager list in the nonfunctioning laptop.

Follow up: I tried again with another search on Dell and found drivers, copied them on to a thumb drive and installed on the ailing laptop. Looks like success! Thank you so much.

@alexafujise

Glad you got it working .

Strange when I just looked at the drivers in the link I posted the AC 3165 are the first two downloads on the list for the Category > Network drivers

It is strange. I just tried it again and the first update is Dell/Alienware Digital Delivery Application

Perhaps it's because Dell is reading my specific laptop model, or filters based on cookies from prior visits. Still, makes it more frustrating for a non-techie like me.

Thanks again

Hi @alexafujise

Try selecting "Network" in the Category box. ;-)
