Hello, My name is Yssamari Valencia and I am majoring in Communications, with an emphasis on public relations, at California State University, Bakersfield.

I decided to major in Communications, when I no longer was interested in the nursing field. I was in the Health Careers Academy for 3 years in high school, and I got to job shadow at the KMC hospital here in Bakersfield. It was a great experience, but just not for me. I enjoy communicating with others and would love to get better at public speaking. What really pushed me to choose that major as well, was the quote “ The number one fear humans have is public speaking, not death.” I heard it from one of my teachers in high school, and it always stuck with me. I don’t have a passion for anything other than helping others, so I’m not sure what I want to do with my major. I know I can get into marketing or business too because we need communication skills for everything.

Skills:

  • Team work
  • Time management
  • Adaptability
  • Customer service
  • Reliability
  • Bilingual

I am currently working as a bond coordinator for a bail agency. I passed the state license to become a bail agent, although at the moment, I am going to wait to move up to a bail agent and stay as a bond coordinator. I have a certificate for the Heath Careers competion that I received for attending that program the 3 years in High school. I have taken a few classes to get a minor in Spanish as well. I want to work on my Spanish since I speak more English at home and my Spanish isn’t great.

My hobbies are listening to music and hanging out with family. I like to work out and go cruising while listening to my favorite songs with my sisters. The picture to the left was taken in Nevada with my family and my girlfriend, we’re not hikers but that day we were feeling adventurous.

In high school, I was in the migrant program, which gave me the opportunity to to go to California Polytechnic State University for a week and a half. It is known for their STEM majors. I got to work on a project with a group of other students from different high schools. We had to build a solar + battery car, it was a small one and it was easy and fun to do. Then, we had to race with other teams which made the project more fun.

I don’t have a lot of repair experience, but I have changed a flat tire to a spare on my GMC Yukon. I did it by watching a YouTube video and it was easy. I will say that made me want to learn more about my car and how to do other repairs. For instance, I want to learn how to change the spark plugs, sensors and how to do an oil change. That is why, this project relates to me, because it help, not just me, but others learn to repair something that most cars typically need repaired.

Fun fact: I want to learn how to play the piano, so I’m looking into buying a small cheap one. I don’t know if I’m going to just use YouTube or take a class for it.
