My friends imac died on him and he bought a new mac mini. Now has found out he cannot use his time machine back ups from his external hard drive because the external hard drive is not working properly.

We would like to remove the internal hard drive and attempt to see if that still works and pull the migrate that info into his new mac mini.

Can you help us Obi Won Kanobi?

Einstellungen

Pull the hard drive out of the old iMac and put it in the external enclosure then use Migration Assistant to move the data. But before you do that, use Disk Utilities from the new machine on the damaged external drive and see if it can be repaired and used.

Yep you can retrieve data by yourself. There are programs to do that. For example kroll ontrack easyrecovery.

I used it few times.

But there is a sad news. I'm not sure but most of these programs work with NTFS and FAT32 files systems. I recently tried to find something that would work with ext4 but I was unsuccessful. So, because OS X is using HFS+ file system there could be problem with software. But I can't believe that they don't exist.

To sum up try to google "recovering HFS+ partition" or find program for recovering data that can work with HFS+ file system.
