Laptop will not turn on

The user cannot get the computer to turn on.

Disconnected power cord

Check to see if the power cord is plugged into the computer. If it is, check to see if the cord is connected into a power outlet. If the cord is properly plugged in, but the laptop still does not start, the cord may be damaged and a replacement may be necessary. For more information, see our repair guide.

Dead battery

First, ensure that the battery is properly connected to the laptop. If not, reconnect the battery and try again. If the computer still does not turn on, the battery may need to be replaced. For information on installing or removing the battery, see the battery repair guide.

Broken power button

The power button may not be responding to being pressed. First try holding the button down for a period of time to see if the computer responds. If nothing happens, consider the above problems before attempting to replace the button. If replacement is necessary, see the power button repair guide.

Screen does not work

The screen is blank or showing random images.

The screen may have some issues connecting with the main processor. Make sure that it and any wires connecting it to the rest of the laptop are in place. If they are, try rebooting the machine and seeing if the screen will start up again.

Keys do not respond

The computer is not responding to the actions of the user.

Try upgrading your BIOS to A06 at the Dell support website.(http://support.dell.com/support) To access, use a usb keyboard.

If problems persist, make sure that the keyboard is connected to the laptop. See our keyboard removal guide.

Machine will not charge

The computer will not gain or retain power in its battery.

Disconnected power cord

Check to see if the power cord is plugged into the computer. If it is, check to see if the cord is connected into a power outlet. If the cord is properly plugged in, but the laptop still does not charge, the cord may be damaged and a replacement may be necessary.

Web cam does not work

The camera is not capturing video of the user.

Try reinstalling the A01 BIOS driver from the Dell support website.(http://support.dell.com/support)

If problems persist, make sure that the webcam is properly connected. See our webcam access guide.

Speakers do not work

"The speakers give out either incorrect or no sound."

First, ensure that both the speaker volume and the master volume are turned on - these are separate, and can be toggled separately. Secondly, try rebooting the machine.

If problems persist, make sure the speakers are connected. If the problem persists, the speakers may need to be replaced. For information on how to do so, see our speaker repair guide.

USB connection is not recognized

The computer does not accept USB devices attached to the computer.

Attempt to reconnect the device in different USB ports. If the device is not recognized in one port, but is recognized in the others, the port may be worn out. To replace a broken port see our guide. If none of the ports are recognizing the device, access My Computer and attempt to start the device manually.
