Six common causes preventing your PS5 from powering on
- Power supply issues
- The power outlet isn't working
- The console does not detect a working display
- Overheating problems
- PS5 won't wake from rest mode
- Other firmware failures
Cause 1: Power supply issues
Check the PS power cable for damage and ensure it is correctly plugged into the console and a power outlet.
- Unplug the power cable. Wait at least a minute, and then plug it back into the PS5.
- Try another power cord. The PS5 uses an IEC C7 power cable that came standard with the PS3 and PS4.
- Attempt to turn on the PS5.
If the power light is not on, move to cause 2. If the PS5 white power light blinks, then perform a power cycle.
- Press and hold the console's power button until the white light stops flashing.
- Remove the power cable.
- Wait at least 20 minutes while the power drains.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn on your PS5.
It is possible you need to replace the power supply. Try the other solutions below before repairing the power supply.
Cause 2: The power outlet is not working
The power outlet may not be feeding power to the console.
- Ensure the PS5 is plugged into a wall outlet.
- Plug in a different power cord into the wall outlet to ensure the wall outlet works.
- Use a working phone charger, another gaming console, or TV.
Cause 3: The console doesn't detect a working display
Check that the HDMI cable is connected correctly between the PS5 and TV.
- If your TV works with another device, try a new HDMI cable.
Cause 4: Overheating problems
Ensure your console has proper ventilation. Poor ventilation can cause the console to overheat, turn off unexpectedly and even not turn on.
- Move the console to a well-ventilated location with no objects on, under, or right next to the console. Ensure that all of the vents are clear and have good airflow.
- Restart the console.
- If you still have trouble with ventilation, make sure the vents are clean. In some cases, you may need to clean or replace the fan.
Cause 5: PS5 won't wake from Rest Mode
If your PS5 was put into Rest Mode but won't turn on after, manually reboot the PS5.
- Press and hold the Playstation console power button for 15 seconds.
Try the solutions below if manually rebooting the PS5 did not work.
Cause 6: Other firmware issues
Sometimes PS5 system software glitches or bugs can prevent the console from powering on. The rest mode bug is an example of a firmware issue. If you can't quite figure out why the PS5 won't turn on, try these solutions:
- If you have the Standard Edition PS5, insert a PS5 acceptable disc into the disc drive.
- Do not force it into the disc drive. If this method works, the console will accept the disk and turn it on.
Restart it in Safe Mode.
- Press and hold down the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep, then release the power button.
- Connect your PS5 controller via USB, press the PS button, and select "Restart PS5."
If your PS5 still does not power on, rebuild the database in Safe Mode.
- Press and hold down the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep, then release the power button.
- Connect your PS5 controller via USB, press the PS button, and select "Rebuild Database."
- Don't turn off your Playstation while this is happening. It will take some time to run this process.
Reset your PS5 in Safe Mode.
- Note: Resetting your PS5 will restore it to the factory setting and erase your game data. Only do this if all else fails.
- Press and hold down the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear a second beep, then release the power button.
- Connect your PS5 controller via USB, press the PS button, and select "Reset PS5" option 6.
