Background
What would otherwise be the called "iPhone SE 4" or "iPhone SE 2025," the newly-renamed iPhone 16e was announced via press release on February 19th, 2024. The fourth affordable "SE family" smartphone from Apple, the iPhone 16e is a simplified version of the iPhone 16, sporting a single 48 MP 2-in-1 camera module (no ultrawide), USB-C charging, an Action button, the 6.1-inch OLED display from the iPhone 14, a notch instead of a Dynamic Island "pill," and a binned-down A18 SoC. It also lacks MagSafe, but keeps wireless charging.
Notably, the iPhone 16e marks the debut of the Apple C1, the first Apple-designed cellular modem chip, "the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone, delivering fast and reliable 5G cellular connectivity."
The iPhone 16e has a starting price of $599, is available in 128, 256, and 512 GB configurations, and comes in either black or white matte aluminum.
Identification
You can identify the iPhone 16e by the model number printed inside of the USB-C charge port.
- A3212
You can also find the model number through the phone's UI by going to the Settings app and navigating to General > About. Tap on the number listed in the Model Number section and it should change to a format that looks like the numbers above.
Additionally, Apple offers a quick online tool to help identify your devices: Identify your iPhone model.
The iPhone 16e features a 6.1-inch (diagonal) flat glass screen, thin black bezels, a black notch at the top of the screen, matte back glass, and aluminum side rails.
Volume controls and the Action Button can be found on the left edge, while the power button is situated on the right. A single camera lens protrudes from the back case. This model has no home button.
The iPhone 16e can be differentiated from the iPhone 16 by its display notch and single camera system (relative to the Dynamic Island and dual camera system on the 16).
The iPhone 16 can be differentiated from the previous iPhone SE by its lack of home button and overall different design.
